Financial assistance in your region

People living with hepatitis C may have difficulty working if their illness becomes severe or the side effects of treatment become difficult. Different programs are available to help cover costs of living for people in these situations. Income assistance (also referred to as financial or social assistance) is for people who need help paying for basic necessities, such as food, shelter, clothing and health care. Applicants may want to discuss their health status with their case worker so they can get the most financial and social support possible.

Income Support

In Nunavut, the Income Support Division of the Department of Education provides Income Support to people who require assistance with paying for their food and housing and who may benefit from job training and employment assistance. There are four categories of Income Support programs in Nunavut:

  • Transitional Assistance (for people needing short-term support)
  • Youth/Educational Support (for people 18-24 pursuing their education)
  • Adult Benefits (for people 25-59 who need financial assistance)
  • Community Living Support and Seniors’ Benefits (for people 60 years and older in need of support)

People with hepatitis C may be interested in asking about the Adult Benefits or Community Living Support programs. Additional financial and educational support services are also available to Income Support clients to help pay for such needs as health-care costs, child care and education. Job training, counselling and employment services are provided to Income Support clients to assist them with becoming financially independent.

The amount of money people can receive every month is based on a variety of factors, including income level, ability to work and family size. To receive Income Support, people must demonstrate that they are making efforts to improve their financial situation, by participating in job training, rehabilitation and counselling programs or by upgrading their educational qualifications. People who cannot work or participate in these activities because of a disability or chronic illness such as hepatitis C may be exempt. Medical documentation from a hepatitis specialist may be required for exemption.

To apply for Income Support, people can contact their local Income Support Office to set up an appointment with an Income Support Worker.  The office contact information is below.  People may also call the Income Support Program directly at (867) 975-6580 for more information.

If a person disagrees with a decision about their Income Support application, they can file an appeal to have their case reviewed. They can speak with their case worker to receive more information about the appeal process. Having the assistance of a community advocate can usually help with this process.
