- lactic acid
- byproduct that occurs when muscle tissue contracts and does not have enough oxygen to fully metabolize glucose. Lactic acid can build up in joints and cause pain and can be a side effect of some drug interactions.
- LDH
- lactate dehydrogenase; a type of enzyme found in various parts of the body, including the liver
- leukopenia
- abnormal decrease in a type of white blood cell called a leukocyte
- liver
- vital organ responsible for manufacturing various proteins, purification of the blood, and processing drugs and other chemicals into harmless substances
- liver enzyme tests
- blood tests used to detect normal or abnormal levels of liver enzymes that can reflect the presence of liver damage or inflammation (like tests for AST and ALT)
- liver failure
- condition in which a large portion of the liver is damaged, causing severe problems with liver function
- liver function tests
- bloot tests used to assess the liver or biliary system's ability to manufacture substances (like tests for bilirubin, albumin, or prothrombin)
- local anesthetic
- drugs that make a person unable to feel pain in a particular part or parts of the body but which do not cause loss of consciousness
- Lockjaw
- a condition in which the jaw becomes stiff and clenches; can be a harm associated with smoking crack and crystal meth
- lube
- lubricant used to help insertion during vaginal or anal penetration, or reduce friction during masturbation
- lymphocyte
- type of white blood cell
