sanitary
sterilized; clean
scarring
hard tissue that develops in response to damage or injury
schizophrenia
mental health condition characterized by disordered thoughts and emotions, and occasionally can involve hallucinations or delusions
septum
dividing wall between two cavities (like the part of the nose that divides the two nostrils)
seroconversion
development of detectable specific antibodies in the blood, after which tests for those antibodies will be positive or reactive
serologic test
Any of a number of tests done using the clear portion of blood. Often refers to a test that determines the presence of antibodies to antigens such as viruses.
serum
the liquid part of the blood that does not clot
side effect
unintended consequence that comes from taking a medicine or medications
social assistance
government program to help people pay for food and rent when they are unable to do so on their own
spider nevi
asymptomatic, spider-like marks that may develop just under the skin in patients with advanced cirrhosis of the liver.
spleen
large organ in the upper left part of the abdomen that performs many important functions. For example, the spleen cleans old red blood cells from the blood and recycles hemoglobin.
steatosis
fatty liver; where extra fat forms around liver cells
steroids
short form of anabolic steroid; refers to a type of testosterone injected by some people to build muscle and gain weight
stigma
social disapproval of personal characteristics or beliefs because they are perceived to be contrary to or in conflict with cultural norms
stimulants
chemicals or drugs that arouse or accelerate physiological responses, like heart rates and breathing rates
stool
feces
strain
smaller group of very similar viruses within the larger population of a particular virus
subcutaneous
under the skin
successful treatment
in hepatitis C, undetectable virus in the blood 6 months after finishing treatment; also called SVR
surgical disinfectant
chemical used to sterilize skin or other surfaces during medical procedures
susceptible
vulnerable or easily affected by something
SVR
Sustained Virological Response; undetectable genetic material from the hepatitis C virus for at least 24 weeks after hepatitis C therapy is completed that indicates successful treatment. A very sensitive RNA test, called a PCR, is used for this purpose.

showing symptoms or signs of disease or illness
symptoms
warning sign or signal of disease, illness, or problem
