Direction 180 is a low-threshold, community-based methadone program that employs a harm reduction and health promotion approach in every aspect of their service delivery. Clients are injection drug users (IDUs) who have been unsuccessful in the past in treating their opioid dependency.  Hep C testing, treatment and support services are available at the Direction 180 office as part of their holistic primary healthcare program.

Patients must be referred by their doctor to see the Infectious Disease Specialist at the Regional Hospital in Sydney.  Hep C treatment is available using a multidisciplinary model whereby patients work with the specialist and nurses. Referrals to dieticians and other support services are available and there are two treatment nurses who assist patients through their treatment.

The AIDS Coalition of Cape Breton (ACCB) runs a needle exchange program at their office location in Sydney.  Sterile injection equipment and support services are available to people who live in the region and require these resources.  S.A.N.E. does community outreach and will visit people in more remote locations of the region if they require needle exchange and counselling services but are unable to come to the office in Sydney. S.A.N.E. operates weekdays.
